Ian Ward tried to kill Alivia the first time they meet, and then insisted he train her to defend herself against the House, who he claims will try to manipulate and take her in for their own political reasons. Review: The White Devil by Justin Evans

The White Devil by Justin Evans

Link to buy The White Devil: A Novel

Story Rating: 3.5 out of 5

Review:

Seventeen-year-old American Andrew Taylor has been exiled by his father to a 400-year-old English boarding school called Harrow. The plan was to straighten out the young man in the wake of a tragedy he had been involved in back at his old school in America. Harrow School happens to be the alma mater of the 19th Century poet Lord Byron. And, as it happens, Andrew bears a striking resemblance to the handsome late poet. And as it also so happens, Andrew is cast as the lead in a school play about Byron's life.

Not surprisingly, Harrow School's rumored ghost begins appearing to Andrew and seems to have confused him with Byron. This is particularly troubling since Lord Byron might have been the ghost's lover when the two were schoolboys at Harrow together 200 years ago. Which explains Andrew's growing suspicion that the ghost is responsible for the death of the first friend Andrew made at Harrow.

I went into The White Devil with low expectations. A friend had given it to me with the warning that she had been disappointed after loving the author's previous book. But surprisingly, I found myself really enjoying this gothic thriller. And what's not to like? A beautiful bad boy American teenager, a creepy ancient English boarding school, a drunken poet, a ghost, a murder mystery, and a nice little romantic interest with the one girl who attends Harrow School in the midst of hundreds of boys. It's the total package. At first, anyway. But things sometimes deteriorate, just like the lungs of a tuberculosis patient from two centuries ago.

The book does have shortcomings, the most glaring of which is the ending. It's contrived, nonsensical, and depressing all at the same time. Rather than allowing a poor ending to spoil an otherwise entertaining novel, readers should simply turn this into one of those "choose your own endings" books. It will have to be a do-it-yourself variety, but the advantage is that you can decide what you'd like to see happen to the characters instead of accepting what the author came up with. Simply write your own version of how this story plays out, and ignore the last two chapters and epilogue in the book. You'll get to enjoy an improved tale and won't have to lie awake half the night grumbling about how the book ended. The way certain book reviewers among us did last night.

The Rearranged Life by Annika Sharma cover reveal and contest

The Rearranged Life by Annika Sharma

Synopsis:

Nithya, a vivacious, intelligent and driven college senior has always known what she's wanted: a successful career in medicine and the love of her family. She's even come to terms with the idea of an arranged marriage, a tradition her conservative Indian family has held up for thousands of years.

When a night of partying puts her on a collision course with danger, Nithya's entire life changes. Enter James St. Clair, the smart, challenging and heartbreakingly handsome American. As Nithya and James fall in love, she questions the future she and her parents have always planned. To make matters worse, Nishanth, the son of newly reunited family friends is the perfect match for her in the eyes of her loved ones.

Now, Nithya has a choice to make: become a doctor and a good Indian bride, or step away from her family and centuries of culture to forge her own path. The decision she comes to takes her on a journey that transforms how she sees her future, her relationships with loved ones, and how she learns to put herself back together when even her best-laid plans fall apart.

AUTHOR BIO:

Annika Sharma was born in India and moved to the United States (Pennsylvania!) when she was a baby. Annika was a daydreamer from day one, always coming up with stories and games of pretend that seemed real. She was a serious journal-writer from fifth grade to college and wrote dramatic scenes for stories often, inspired by soap operas she watched in summers off from school.

Eventually, when the time for college came around, Annika’s parents encouraged her to pursue journalism. Convinced she couldn’t make a living from writing, Annika disagreed. After five years, two degrees, two minors, working with children, being a dancer teacher, and creating a two-and-a-half page resume in college that had interests so all-over-the-place that even she couldn’t make sense of it, Annika finally decided her parents were right. Writing was where her heart was, all along.

In the month before graduate school, the idea Annika had in my mind for years finally poured out in the form of the novel, The Rearranged Life. Annika began editing in earnest after she finished her Master’s degree in Early Childhood Special Education, landing Stacey Donaghy of Donaghy Literary Group as an agent. Three months later, she had a book deal with Curiosity Quills.

In her spare time, Annika loves spending time with her family and friends, often indulging in the three S’s: Starbucks, shopping and superhero movies. As a chocolate lover and general all-around vegetarian foodie, Annika also adores cooking.

I grew up in Northern California with my head in a book and my feet in the sand. I dreamt of becoming a painter but the heady scent of libraries with their shelves full of books drew me into the world of storytelling. I love the New Adult genre, but any story about a love so desperately wrong and impossibly beautiful makes me swoon.

I now live in Southern Florida and while I don’t get to read as much as I like, I still bury my toes in the sand. If I’m not writing or fighting to contain the banana plantation in my backyard, you can find me spending time with my handsomely tattooed husband, my brilliantly practical son and a mischievous miniature boxer…
But Seriously?
Here are ten things you probably really want to know about me.
I grew up a faculty brat. I can swear like a sailor. I love men in uniform. I hate being told what to do. I can do your taxes (but don’t ask). The Bird Market in Hong Kong freaks me out. My favorite word is desperate…or dirty, or both—I can’t decide. I have a thing for muscle cars. But never reply on me for driving directions, ever. And I have a new book boyfriend every week—don’t tell my husband.

Review: Werecat The Fugitive by Andrew J. Peters

Werecat The Fugitive by Andrew J. Peters

Link to buy Werecat: The Fugitive

Story Rating: 3 out of 5

Review:

This story continues the adventures of Jacks and his fight against the Glaring. Farzan and Belle wait at home while Jacks goes to Barbados to retrieve some important items. While he is there he comes across some other werecats and must decide if they are friend or foe and how to avoid those who are hunting him.

Jacks must fight through the turmoil and emotions that fill his travels. It was interesting to see how he deals with everything. As he comes to terms with his discoveries Jacks learns where his heart belongs and what he must do. There are many characters in this book and it would have been nice to see a bit more depth to the secondary characters. Maarten and Annika are intriguing characters as are their entourage. I would have enjoyed more character building to understand why they do some of the things that they do.

While this storyline is appealing I was not pulled into this book. I did not feel immersed in their story and felt that it was a dry read for me.

Review: Campus Cravings Volume I & II anthology

Review: Campus Cravings Volume I & II: Higher Learning MM Bundle by Cassandra Carr, KyAnn Waters, Mia Downing, Sara York

Story: 5 out of 5

Blurb:

Welcome to Cathia University, where school is in session! Nine of today's hottest gay romance authors have crafted brand-new interrelated novellas celebrating everything wonderful about college, including sophisticated professors, sexy teaching assistants, ambitious grad students, and spirited undergraduates, all looking for the same thing: an A+ in true love.

Review:

How does the old saying go? There's a bad apple in every bunch. That tends to hold true with anthologies, with each collection containing at least one story that just doesn't measure up to the rest. Fortunately, this bundle proved the adage wrong.

Some of these apples--like KyAnn Waters' "Private Lessons"--were on the sweet side. This tale of young love dealt heavily with coming out, as did the story following it. Both were tightly-written and engaging, but made it seem like the choice of whether or not to stay in the closet would be the anthology's overriding theme. "The Eloquent Jock" by Cassandra Carr changed gears completely by throwing a hot teacher into the mix and upping the spice of level of the sex scenes. From there onward, the stories varied even more dramatically. "Switching Leads" relied on a truly tear-jerking plot, while "Winning Bracket" went for a party atmosphere. More importantly, all of the stories delivered well-constructed characters and engaging plots, making it a must buy for lovers of gay romance.

Lovers of BDSM, however, will find very little of interest here. It simply isn't that sort of anthology. That doesn't mean it isn't worth picking up!

Rafe by Jo Raven cover reveal

RAFE (Inked Brotherhood, #5) by Jo Raven

RELEASE DATE: End March/Beginning April 2015

SYNOPSIS:

His name is Rafaele Vestri, Rafe to his friends.

He’s tall, strong, handsome. Distant. He often comes to the café where I work, but we don’t talk much. He looks at me, though. Stares at me, his gaze heated, and I can’t help but stare back. I want him, I won’t deny it. I’ve never seen anyone that beautiful, anyone that powerful, in my life.

But he’s growing more withdrawn by the day. Something’s up, and he won’t tell. I know about his past – the murder of his family when he was fifteen. I can imagine how much it must have cost him. So much violence contained in that strong body, waiting to be unleashed. What is he seeking? What is he training so hard for? Why is looking at me like he’s dying to touch me, but won’t dare?

Even as I try to stop thinking about him, get interested in other boys, I realize I can’t. I’m caught, body and soul, just like that. And I tell myself, Megan, girl… What have you gotten yourself into this time?

This is book 5 in the Inked Brotherhood series which started with Asher. It is a stand-alone work. No cliffhanger.

The expected publication date is end March/beginning April 2015, on all of your favorite e-book websites.

Excerpt:

I’m staring at Rafe’s hand. Big, strong, callused. A scar runs from his thumb to the index finger.

He’s looking at me, waiting. What does he want?

I lift my hand, place it in his. It fits on his palm, smaller, darker, thinner. He seems as entranced by the contrast as I am. His fingers slowly curl, closing around mine. His lips part, but no sound comes from his mouth, and his gaze remains fixed on our entwined hands, pale lashes hiding the gold of his eyes.

Now I’m the one caught, transfixed. His mouth looks soft, vulnerable, at odds with his strong, angular features and the broad set of his shoulders. The need to touch his face is overwhelming, and I step closer, so close I can sense his scent. Not a cologne, but the deep scent of his skin, like musk and warm metal. I can see the rise and fall of his chest underneath the black Deathmoth T-shirt he’s wearing under his open jacket, see the outline of his strong pecs.

We’re standing so close our breaths mingle, and our bodies touch in places as we shift, feathery brushes that send fire across my skin, into my belly, making me ache. He places his hands on my waist and I grip his thick, sinewy forearms. My stomach drops as if I’m standing at the edge of a precipice, on the edge of a moment that can change everything.

What’s happening? It’s as if in the hollow darkness, the barrier between us is crumbling, the wall he’s set between himself and the world is falling.

His hands tighten on my hipbones and his lashes lift, his gaze moving to my mouth. His breathing is ragged. He tugs me against him, his fingertips digging painfully into my flesh, his arms flexing with barely controlled strength.

His arousal presses into my stomach, hot and thick, caught sideways in his jeans.

My mind fills up with static. Rafe wants me. There’s the solid proof of his desire. The heated gaze I’ve felt so often on me is translated into a physical reaction, and it makes me feel so hot I might burst into flames. He’s so handsome, I can’t help myself. I want to stroke his square jaw, drag my fingertips over the golden stubble on his cheeks, kiss those damnable dimples.

I whimper, the sound coming from deep inside me, and he freezes, goes so still I’m not even sure he’s breathing.

Then he jerks back, releases me so fast I’m left reeling.

“Fuck,” he hisses. He buries his fingers in his short blond hair, pulls, his mouth now hard like the rest of him, pressed into a flat line. “This is a mistake.”

A knot is gathering in my throat, in my chest, cutting off air.

I want to be mad at him, but his hands are trembling, and his amber eyes so full of pain I forget my anger before it even forms. He’s like mist, here and suddenly gone, lost into thin air. I have to touch him, touch his bare skin, prove he’s real.

“Wait.” I lift my hand to his face, fingertips skimming over the smooth skin of his cheekbone. Warm. Satin soft.

A pang goes through my chest, an ache that feels too much like sorrow, and I’m not sure if it’s mine or his.

He jerks away, his eyes wide on his pale face. He reaches up, his hand hovering over the spot I touched. Then he turns and rushes off into the crowd.

My hand is still hovering in midair. I don’t know for how long I stand there, staring at my splayed fingers, trying to figure out what happened. Or maybe trying to find another explanation for his reaction, desperate for him to be different to any other handsome, arrogant guy. Maybe I imagined the pain in his gaze – or maybe that pain is real but doesn’t make a difference. Traumatic past or not, he’s sorry he touched me, sorry he desired me. Big surprise. Why would he desire me, of all girls? There are so many vying for his attention. Girls who have witty, sexy things to say, and who don’t go stiff like cardboard when he touches them.

The thought of him touching other girls shouldn’t hurt quite as much as it does. And this is a bad sign. Very bad sign, Megan, I tell myself and lower my hand that touched him. I feel as if my fingertips are numb, burnt by the feel of his skin.
