Review: Lion by B.B. Sorores

Lion by B.B. Sorores

Story Rating: 2 out of 5

Review:

This book starts slow, a story about a poor boy from the country getting a full scholarship to a prestigious university in the City and his attempts to fit in. From there, things get a little bit more complicated. Hints are dropped about something bad in his past, about his anger. At times, I found myself drawn into the story and read quickly, but for the most part I found the pace to be much slower than I'd like.

It was a confusing read. It was one of those stories that dangles the smallest hint in front of you but doesn't give you any answers until the last quarter, and even then it doesn't REALLY answer them. Finishing the book, I felt like only one or two of my questions were answered but not in a way that made me want to grab the next book when it's released.

The characters relied heavily on stereotypes – the charming and strange Texan; the meek, pretty, and naive girl; the powerful, captivating older professor; the 'crazy' conspiracy theorists; the lead being strong, smart, perfect if not for his anger and lack of money. Character development throughout the book was rather lacking; most of the characters remained quite static in the aforementioned traits.
As for the sex (when it eventually happens), it's fraught with odd descriptions such as "drinking" from the character's clit, "searching out each breast" and clichéd accounts of the two cumming together the first time they have sex – which is actually very unlikely to happen the first time, despite what erotica may have you believe.

Overall, I was disappointed by this book. The writing itself was well-done but the pace and the character development left a lot to be desired and there were a lot of significant events that the characters were confused about yet no one seemed to question anything – even when the reader was questioning it and not getting any answers during the entire book.

Scattered Colors by Jessica Prince book tour

Scattered Colors by Jessica Prince

Blurb:

The use of the phrase life is hard has become so diluted, so overstated through the years that when someone hears it the words go in one ear and out the other. The impact is no longer there. The meaning, the importance of that phrase no longer holds any water with those it's spoken to.

Freya Linden's life became hard at the age of seventeen, the summer before her senior year of high school. The bright colors of her life faded into black and white, a colorless shell full of loneliness.

Until she met him.

Parker Owens breathed life back into her world. With him she began to heal. But happiness isn't a guarantee. Sometimes opening yourself up only leads to more heartbreak. The person she thought to be her saving grace shattered her completely.
Her story isn't a pretty one. The bumps in the road were monumental and infinite. But it's her story. And the one thing that holds true is this: despite the hardships, she made it through to the other side.

Author Bio:

Born and raised around Houston Texas, Jessica spent most of her life complaining about the heat, humidity, and all around pain in the ass weather. It was only as an adult that she quickly realized the cost of living in Houston made up for not being able to breathe when she stepped outside. That's why God created central air, after all.

Jessica is the mother of a perfect little boy--she refuses to accept that he inherited her attitude and sarcastic nature no matter what her husband says.

In addition to being a wife and mom, she's also a wino, a coffee addict, and an avid lover of all types of books--romances still being her all time favs. Her husband likes to claim that reading is her obsession but she just says it's a passion...there's a difference. Not that she'd expect a boy to understand.

Jessica has been writing since she was a little girl, but thankfully grew out of drawing her own pictures for her stories before ever publishing her first book. Because an artist she is not.

Review: Breakaway by Vera Roberts

Breakaway by Vera Roberts

Link to buy Breakaway: New Adult Romance (Breakaway Series Book 1)

Story Rating: 3 out of 5

Blurb:

Dean Winchester is at the place he really doesn’t want to be – stuck at the airport.

Coming back from a family emergency, he would rather be relaxed at his home in Manhattan Beach, California, and getting his head back into the hockey game. Instead, he’s stuck at the worst airport in all of America – Chicago’s infamous O’Hare. At least the company he’s keeping isn’t too bad to look at. He only needs to convince her there can be something more if she wants it – and if she doesn’t kill him first.

Sydney Walker hates weddings. And she really hates weddings that she’s the bridesmaid in.

Returning from her third wedding in a year where she has perfected the role of bridesmaid, Sydney only wants to get back home in San Francisco. A snowed-in flight and every hotel room booked to capacity, Sydney is forced to share a room with a gorgeous man from Southern California. She’s not necessarily worried about him making a move on her but rather, if she could keep her hands to herself.

Breakaway is a sensual New Adult romance series that deals with trust, long-distance relationships, and finding yourself again.

Review:

This is a cute short story that can be read in one sitting. As a resident of Chicago, the whole being snowed in scenario is definitely believable. Now the whole staying in a hotel room with someone you never knew before and just met.... well, that's a stretch for me. The chemistry between he characters is perfect and Dean seems like almost too good to be true.

The main issue with this is the length. This is a short story that ends abruptly. It says this is book one of a series on amazon so I expect there will be more to this story. I'd personally prefer to have a full sized novel all at once versus getting chunks of a story at 50 pages (or so) a pop.

A band trying to win it big on reality TV. A secret romance that might ruin it all.

Music major Maddie Taylor just finished her junior year of college and has a summer internship lined up with the LA Philharmonic, yet every night she practices guitar and secretly dreams of a louder life. But geeky girls like her don't get to be rock stars. That is, until tattooed singer Jared Cross catches her playing guitar and invites her to join his band on The Sound, a reality TV show competition.

Once on the show, Maddie discovers there's more to Jared than his flirty smile and bad boy reputation - and that he's just as big a geek as she is. With each performance their attraction becomes impossible to ignore, but when the show pressures them to stay single, they're forced to keep their relationship secret.

As the competition heats up, Jared will do whatever it takes for his band to win, and Maddie must decide if following her dream is worth losing her heart.

*** New Adult romance suitable for 17+ due to mature content. ***

Review:

This is a fun read that flies by because it is so enjoyable. All of the characters in this series ( I read the novella that takes place before this book- More Than Exes.) are well written and easy to like which is not always the case in New Adult books. There are sex scenes that are very hot for a NA book which was surprising but greatly appreciated. The world building for the series really works and is believable. The behind the scenes of the reality show were interesting and I found myself rooting for Maddie and Jared's band to win the contest on The Sound. Based on the two books I've read so far I would recommend this series.

Review: The Wrong Guy by Claudia Whitsitt

The Wrong Guy by Claudia Whitsitt

Link to buy The Wrong Guy

Rating: 3.5 out of 5

It's 1969, and Katie is heading off for her freshman year in college at Eastern Michigan University. As eager as she is to start this new chapter of her life, leaving home is bittersweet. Her mother is the queen of guilt and is trying to make sure that Katie feels horrible about leaving her behind. It's not like Mom's going to be alone, since Katie has seven younger brothers at home, but as the only girl, Mom relied heavily on Katie.

It's particularly hard for Katie to ignore her mother's negativity because the fact is there's something to worry about at Katie's new college – besides frat parties and enough beer to drown a horse, that is. The area around Katie's school had recently been the site of multiple co-ed murders. The man believed to be the murderer has been caught, but the town is still on edge. Katie reassures her mother that plenty of safety precautions are in place, and after all, the maniac is behind bars, but she still has some misgivings about being where she is.

On Katie's first day on campus, she meets her wild new roommate and promptly asks the dormitory administrator if she can change rooms. The answer is no, so Katie is forced to settle in with a girl whose upbringing and attitudes are the polar opposites of Katie's. While Katie is religious and straight laced, Janie is irreverent with a relaxed attitude toward life. Definitely a female dorm version of the Odd Couple.

In The Wrong Guy, Katie's problems at college include such perennial favorites as premarital sex, discord between roommates, and family strife. The book also focuses on less common issues that thankfully fewer young women encounter, like a serial killer, date rape, and a kidnapping.

The dialogue felt unnatural at times, and sometimes they lasted too long with too little of importance being discussed. The mystery and thriller elements of the story held my interest, though. I wasn't emotionally invested in any of the characters, but I understood where both Katie and her roommate were coming from. Did all of their choices make sense? Definitely not. In fact, I wanted to strangle Katie for refusing to tell anyone about the incident with her ex-boyfriend, but it made sense that after the guilt-ridden upbringing from her mother, Katie's gut reaction to many situations was to blame herself.

Overall a good read and an enlightening peek into college life back in the days when the Vietnam War raged and there was still hope for a Beatles reconciliation.

She wrote her first historical romance at age eight and gave it to her grandmother for her birthday. It had illustrations and involved a lot of fainting and a main character named Loretta. She's glad that her readers now are not subjected to her artwork.

She sometimes wonders if the naked men in her books might be an inadvertent consequence of attending a women's college for four years.

Synopsis:

Easier to Run is a full-length standalone novel.
Reunited “friends-to-lovers” Contemporary New Adult Romance

“He took my world by storm with four simple words ‘I’m your new neighbor.’ I was only five at the time, but I couldn’t look away from the older boy staring at me through the hole in our back yard fence. In my mind, he was mine from that moment, but I knew that could never happen.
When I was fifteen, I learned that things that should never happen can sweep in and rip your entire life to shreds.
I lost everything.
I lost him….”
Six years after tragedy changed Cassie’s life forever, she continues to yearn for that one thing that will make her feel whole–the boy she was taken away from. The boy who had stood by her side and defended her at every turn. The boy whose shoulder she cried on when her parents died, after her sister committed suicide, during her testimony against her brother-in-law.
With her past a heavy burden that sits on her chest, threatening to suffocate her every night, she somehow finds the strength to go back and face it. To finally go back and find the man who might make her heart beat again and ease the dead pain she feels inside.
But six years can change people, and their relationship can never be the same.
